Putting a vehicle away for a season is not the same as parking it for a week. Whether you are storing a convertible for winter or a daily driver for a summer trip abroad, the goal is to protect the components that degrade when a car sits idle. A little forethought now can prevent unpleasant surprises when you are ready to drive again.

Several factors shape what your storage routine should look like. Climate is the first consideration. A vehicle kept in a humid region faces different risks than one stored where temperatures drop well below freezing. Moisture encourages corrosion on bare metal and can invite mold into the cabin, while extreme cold can stress batteries and fluids. The length of storage matters too. A few weeks require far less preparation than several months. Finally, vehicle type plays a role. A modern car with an electronic handbrake and extensive computer modules, a classic with a carburetor, or a motorcycle each have unique needs.

Start with observation, not guesswork. Walk around the vehicle and note any existing rust, leaks, or cracked rubber. Check the condition of the tires for flat spots or weather checking. Review the owner’s manual for any storage-specific notes from the manufacturer. These simple, safe inspections give you a clear starting point.

Wash the car by hand using a dedicated automotive soap and clean microfiber mitts, working from the top down. Pay special attention to wheel wells, the underbody edges, and the areas behind the bumpers where grime tends to collect. Rinse completely and dry with soft towels to prevent water spots.

After the paint is dry, apply a fresh layer of wax or a paint sealant. This provides a sacrificial barrier between the finish and any airborne contaminants in the garage. For added protection, treat exterior rubber seals and weatherstripping with a silicone-based conditioner to keep them pliable and prevent them from drying out or cracking.

Inside the cabin, remove all trash, loose change, and food wrappers. Even a single crumb can attract mice or ants during the winter months. Vacuum the carpets, floor mats, and upholstery thoroughly, including under the seats and in the crevices of the center console. Wipe down all hard surfaces—the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel—with a mild cleaner suitable for your interior type. Managing Fluids and the Fuel System

If the oil is close to its normal change interval, it makes sense to handle that service before parking the vehicle. The same logic applies to coolant and brake fluid, though those systems are best left to a qualified professional if you are unsure about their condition or how to check them properly.

Fuel deserves special attention because it can degrade over time and draw in moisture. A common approach is to fill the tank nearly full to leave little room for humid air to condense. If the vehicle will sit for more than a few weeks, a fuel stabilizer—mixed according to the product instructions—can help keep the fuel from breaking down. Always add the stabilizer before topping off the tank so it circulates through the system when the engine runs for a few minutes afterward.

Moisture in the fuel system is usually a silent problem. You might notice it only when the vehicle struggles to start months later. Keeping the tank full, using stabilizer, and letting the engine run long enough to reach normal operating temperature are all simple habits that reduce that risk. When in doubt, a professional can flush the fuel system or replace a fuel filter before storage, but only if the vehicle’s condition truly requires it.

Battery Care and Electrical Systems

Before you tuck the vehicle away, give some thought to the battery. Even when the key is out of the ignition, modern cars draw a small amount of power to keep the clock, radio presets, and security system alive. Over several weeks, that steady drain can leave the battery too weak to start the engine come spring. More importantly, a deeply discharged battery can shorten its overall lifespan, so a little planning now saves you from a dead battery later.

The simplest approach is to disconnect the negative battery cable. This stops the parasitic drain entirely. However, keep in mind that disconnecting the battery will also erase learned settings in the engine computer and reset your radio stations and clock. On some vehicles, it may also trigger the alarm when you reconnect it later, so have your key fob handy. If you choose this route, make sure the negative cable is secured away from the terminal so it cannot accidentally touch metal and complete a circuit.

Alternatively, a battery maintainer—often called a trickle charger—is a better option if you want to preserve your settings. Unlike a standard charger, a maintainer is designed to stay connected for months. It supplies a small, steady charge and then switches to a maintenance mode once the battery is full.

  • Use a maintainer if you want to keep the alarm armed and your radio presets intact.
  • Disconnect the battery if you have no power outlet nearby or simply prefer the simplicity of a hard cutoff.

Before connecting any device, check the battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Clean them with a wire brush if needed, but be careful not to disturb the vent caps on older batteries. If you notice cracks, bulging, or heavy corrosion, have a professional inspect the battery before you store the vehicle.

Tires, Wheels, and Lifting the Vehicle

Tires often give the first clue that a vehicle has been sitting too long. Before you do anything else, check the pressure with a simple gauge. A tire that looks fine can still be low, and a low tire will develop a flat spot where the weight of the car presses down on the rubber. If you catch it early, a short drive on a warm day often rounds the tire back out. If the vehicle has been parked for many months, that flat spot may have become permanent, and a rough ride will remind you every time you drive.

Walk around the vehicle and look at each tire’s sidewall. Cracks, bulges, or a faded, dry appearance suggest the rubber is aging. There is no way to reverse that from the driveway, but you can keep it from getting worse by keeping the tires clean and out of direct sun when possible.

If you plan to raise the vehicle to take weight off the tires, you need to do it the right way.

  • Only use a solid, level surface. Concrete is far better than gravel or blacktop.
  • Place wheel chocks firmly against the tires that stay on the ground.
  • Use a floor jack to lift the vehicle, but never crawl under it while the jack is the only thing holding it up. Jacks can shift or lose pressure without warning.
  • Lower the vehicle onto a set of jack stands rated for the vehicle’s weight, and make sure the stands are positioned under the manufacturer’s designated lift points. Give the vehicle a firm push to confirm it is stable before you walk away.

Choosing a Storage Location and Pest Prevention

The first decision you will make is whether the vehicle will live indoors or outdoors for the season. A garage, carport, or shed offers the most protection from rain, snow, and sun damage. If you do not have covered space, a quality outdoor cover designed for full-vehicle use is your next best option, but it will not prevent moisture from collecting underneath on damp days. Regardless of your choice, the single most important factor is a dry, stable environment. Fluctuating temperatures cause condensation inside the cabin and under the hood, which can lead to musty odors and corrosion over time.

Before you park the vehicle for good, take a few minutes to inspect the surrounding area. Look for obvious signs of rodent activity, such as droppings or chewed materials, in a garage or shed. Mice and squirrels are drawn to the warmth of an engine bay and can cause costly damage to wiring and hoses. A few simple, non-toxic deterrents can help:

  • Place dryer sheets or cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil on top of the engine and around the wheel wells.
  • Stuff steel wool into the tailpipe opening (remove it before starting the engine) and any large gaps in the garage door seals.
  • Keep the area around the vehicle free of birdseed, pet food, and clutter that attracts pests.

Do not rely on poisons or traps inside the cabin, as the odor from a trapped animal can be difficult to remove.
