Dragging it across the hood or doors grinds those contaminants into the clear coat, leaving fine scratches that dull the finish.
Treat the wheels and tires as a separate job with separate tools. Use a dedicated mitt, sponge, or brush that never touches the painted surfaces. Work from the wheels first, then rinse them thoroughly before moving to the body. This keeps the gritty material away from the paint entirely. If you use a bucket for wheels, do not reuse that water for the rest of the car.
The underbody is another area people skip or, worse, blast with a pressure washer at close range. A gentle rinse with a regular garden hose or a wide fan setting is enough to wash away road salt and mud. You are not trying to strip the factory undercoating or dislodge anything sealed. Just a steady spray along the frame and suspension areas will do. If you notice heavy caked-on mud, let it soften with water first, then rinse again. Avoid aiming directly at wiring connectors or obviously sealed components for long periods.
